Yet another speaker question thread

I have an aftermarket DVD deck and I am thinking to getting rid of the Bose amp and speakers. The HU comes with a 200W amp built into it. I am looking for improved sound quality and not just powerful bass. With this in mind, I have two questions:

What speakers do you guys recommend?

I don't want to spend a ridiculous amount on the speakers but expect improved quality over stock.

Can I replace the front speakers without removing the door panels?

I removed the door panels on my G1 when I did the replaced the front speakers and broke a bunch of tabs in the process. I don't want to risk doing the same again. Is it possible to remove the front speakers by removing the grille and cutting out the plastic bars?

theres not enough room to remove a couple of bolts

i dont think you should worry about the door panels clips breaking.

they're held in by these plastic push rivets anyhow. easily replaceable but i never had to and i dont know how many times i've taken off my door panels. i've taken them off over and over again to install speaker, fix my door actuator, put sound deadener.... i've done it a whole bunch of times and haven't broken anything really

anyhow the best bang for the buck speakers. i've heard great things about the pioneer rev-series coaxials.

im getting the 6.5" in probably a week so i'll let you know how they sound.

i was set on getting either diamond audio d661i 6.5" 2-way coaxials or the eclipse se8365 6.5" inch 3-way coaxs

but i heard some good reviews on the rev-series so i decided to try them out.

A well installed set of decent speakers will outperform a great set of poorly installed speakers, so make a bit of extra install effort and it will be worth it. You need to make some modifications to install aftermarket speakers anyway, so make some solid baffles (mounts) out of MDF and seal the doors and you will be happy.
Just FYI, the power rating of HUs is often wildly inflated, and that is definitely the case with yours- it simply isn't possible to make an amplifier that will fit in the HU case that will output more than a fraction of that rating. Your HU probably is right around 15-20 watts RMS.

I have to agree with Guy ^^ on the power rating of your HU. It's pretty rare that (almost) any aftermarket HU would push much more than a true 18 to
20W max.!! Just look at most amps today, (either mono or multi-channel), a mono channel subwoofer amp rated at 200W is def. larger than your HU, and while somewhat different in its ratings, even that doesn't put out a true
200W of clean power. But understand that you are getting 2 to 3 times more power with your aftermarket HU than you are with your stock Bose OEM radio! Even the Bose Premium HU with the separate amp, that's in your Legend, is rated at 250W - but they failed to tell you that they dropped the Ohm rating down to 2 Ohm to achieve that 250W, whereas most Bose systems are 4 Ohm. Now, at 4 Ohm, that same 250W Bose amp 'might' only be pushing out 100W if you're lucky.
Speakers: I really get some great sound out of my Alpine Type R & Type S speakers. (I had 6-1/2" Type R in the doors, and Type S -6 X 9" in the rear deck, before I went to an all Diamond Competition Separates system). The Type R's work well without an add'l amp, but pump about 50W thru those bad-boys, (with a separate amp), and you've got some killer sound! I found that the Type S -6 X 9's didn't perform much differently with or without an amp, with the exception of having gotten some add'l bass out of them with a 50W per channel amp.
Check around on the internet - I found both Alpine spkr sets for about half the price than was offered by Crutchfield. (don't hold me to it, but the
6-1/2"'s were like $65-$69, and the 6 X 9"'s were less than $90.).
Hope this helps.

18-20 watts is a lot of power actually.

That's because most of the amps today are designed by high school dropouts.

If you need to more that 20 watts to drive a 6.5'' driver, you can throw that driver into the garbage can IMHO.
Most of the speakers rated at 50 watt RMS maximum will play just as well driven by 10-15 watts RMS.

Thanks guys.

I am aware that the HU pushes 200W at peak vs my Stock 80W amp (is the 80W peaker power as well?)

I will definitely look at Alpine speakers. I thought that the $60 Visonik speakers I installed in my G1 were great, so my sense of what is good or not may be off. I wanted to get an idea of what the audiphiles recommended.

I would have to disagree with your statement regarding speaker power. You're not going to get the midbass output (that I would want) with 15w. While a tweet really doesnt need more than that, a good 6" to 7" separate I would want a lot more power. Dynaudio is a very nice driver and can take 200-300w RMS easily. I ran 90w rms to my Focals and plan to do the same with my ESB/Zapco drivers. On the flip side, I would agree that with 15w you can achieve decent sound that is pretty loud, but it has to be a very good amp. About 10 years ago we ran some Monolithic Class A amps that did I think about 15x2 or 20x2 and they were some of the best amps I've ever heard.

At any rate, on a budget system the Type R's are pretty good IMO. Usually what I've sold to people on a small budget is the entry level Powerbass drivers. I ran them in my daily driver for quite a long time showing them off and I thought they were great for the money. Now in there I run Exile Audio components.

Why not? What's midbass?

Dynaudio is a very nice driver and can take 200-300w RMS easily.
And so what? I can build you a 3'' speaker than can take 3 KW easily... that just means its a really inefficient speaker!

Exactly! It used to be that people were more selective and AMPs were designed by qualified people. Now everybody and their mother makes AMPs. 99% shit and the dipshits keep on buying them!

though i hardly ever agree with legendvr he's right...

wattage ratings are just the efficiencies of a speaker... more than likely its just a marketing tool also...

perfect example is when many people think a 1000W RMS sub will outperform a 500W RMS subwoofer.

definitely not true. and dynaudios are just known to be inefficient speaker. though they sound great they need alot of power. anyhow the majority of the time you wont even see rated RMS
