Code 12 EGR

This piece of junk. It's only got 244,000 miles on it and now I've got a intermittant check engine light.

Just kidding.....Joke......

What a car. 244k. I checked the codes and got a "12". Today I removed the EGR valve and cleaned most of the carbon off it, it was pretty crusty. I'll test it out tomorrow.

As you may already know, Code 12 can also be caused by a faulty vacuum solenoid valve in the underhood "black box" on the firewall.

I also suggest that you remove the EGR tube to check whether it is blocked/obstructed particularly at the end attached to the intake manifold. Had mine off this past summer and I was surprised to find that portion of the tube and the orifice of the intake manifold almost completely blocked. Removal is a major pain.

As we say in the aviation business.... Ops check failed! I got the check engine light about 10 miles into my 35 mile commute this morning. I guess I will have to follow the real troubleshooting procedures. The EGR valve was so easy to take off I thought I would give cleaning it a try first. Thanks LPB for the tube tip. I remember battling that thing when I did the headgaskets, I think my hands still have scars. Thanks MikeD for the Link.

Update. Since I purchased a used EGR valve for $10 I haven't had any more problems with it. I didn't even put the EGR valve on, all I had to do was purchase it. I guess all I had to do was scare it with the threat of replacement.

Could use some Help/Advice. We should have our 91 Legend running in a day or so (replaced BHG). I doubt the EGR is working. I would like to DISABLE the EGR system until we sort out other issues. Any thoughts? Block some vac lines? Anything else to consider? Other factors in the system? Any experience in this area would really be appreciated. Raceboone

you could make a block off plate but you will have cel other then that try to clean it with brake fluid. im not sure how well that will work but ive heard some have tried it and it worked but im not sure.
