stronger trunk cover springs

Hi,
Perhaps you have seen my modifications at the back of my Legend '91. (As seen at www.krdmusic.de/pkw/honda/galerie.htm) As I take apart the spoiler of the trunk cover it has less weight.
Of course, I've known that and I have bought the springs of the model '95.
After replaycing I recognized, they are powerlessly to hold the cover on the top. Do anybody know the modifications regarding the spring mounting Honda/Acura have done as they modified the back.
It would help if someone take a photo of its trunk.

Greetings
Ralph

Ralph:

Acura had optional torsion springs for spoiler appications. You used to be able to buy just the
springs, but I don't know if they are still available.

Check the hinge mount under the package shelf. On my 1992 Cpe on each hinge there are two tabs/slots. You could try moving the torsion springs to the other tabs/slots. This may provide a slightly higher rate of torsion.

Just buying a set of 1995 or 93-94 trunk torsion springs does not automatically mean that they will provide enough torsion to carry the weight of a spoiler. The torsion springs need to be those sold for the spoiler application.

Hi LPB,
I think, you have not undestand my problem. My Legend have had the spoiler OEM (german model). And it have had also the strong trunk springs build. But these springs are tooooo strong. The cover jumps up hard. So I have bought the springs of the model '95, they are less, bc our german Legend '95 is without spoiler.

Believe, I got them at my Honda dealer.

But now these spring are powerlessly to hold the cover. I know about the ability to change the setup, but the springs are not strong enough at all. That's what I mean I've wrote before.

Ralph

Hello Ralph

Please read your pm, I wrote you some days ago about you problem. I also have taken some pix of my trunk springs. I can send it to you per email or upload it to imagestation, when I´m at home today in the evening.

Good luck

Hi HondaLegend,
oh, i've been waiting for an answer. I'm sorry, but I haven't found the pm's at my User CP. Now I have read your message. I think, I'm not able to turn around the springs 180° as yet. I tried the two positions for setup the strength, but the springs are slack.

Your link to www.imagestation.com do not works. It seems, that I has to log on.

Yes, the spoiler is mounted with screws and unfortunately there are holes on the trunk cover when you take apart the spoiler. But at my Legend's trunk cover has been corrosion arount the lock and the tint was bad anyway. So I have done new varnishing.

Although many thanks. Today I will take a pic.

greeting
Ralph

Ralf,
as to [How To Remove Trunk Cover] and their springs, you can see that here. As how it looks like about [Trunk Shock] you can see that here too. A member has made that at that time. -Mike

Hi HondaLegend or anyone who can help,
here are pics of the spring holder in my trunk. As you can see I have put little tubes and other stuff in addition to make the springs more strain.

Perhaps the plastic holder (center clip) in the middle (left on the pic) of the trunk is different to mine.

Mike: At your description everything looks such as on the pics. But what is realy the different of '91 to '95 trunk springs?

greetings
Ralph

This plastic holder looks like mine. I have no clue what's the different. should be fine. Maybe you can try to use on older spring (from the 91er) and one newer one (from the 95er).

But what is the reason for this? Maybe you get tht wrong ones, maybe from a sedan?

There are 3 kinds of springs:
91-95 sedan have the Honda-Part-Number 74871-SP0-000 and 74872-SP0-000
91-93 coupe 74871-SP1-G00 and 74872-SP1-G00
93-94 coupe 74871-SP1-000 and 74871-SP1-000

Yes I am.
I was not able to change the nick of legend27 to legend32. So that's old. I'm surprised about an other member at that forum with a Legend. I haven't seen anyone.

Sometimes we will contact there. But, I don't know your nick.

I got the springs no. 74872-SP1-000. What's that ?

Maybe it's an ability to take one old strong and one new spring. I thing the trunk lid will be pushed up more at one side then. Is that best?

greetings
Ralph

Hello

my nick there is "Quautiputzli" (funny nick, but it doesnt matter).I'm sure you have seen me, we had contact some times there.

Okay, you should have 1x 74871-SP1-000 and 1x 74872-SP1-000, one for the left and one for the right side. These are for the 95 coupe.

Try it with one old and one new spring, at the moment it's the only solution I know. Maybe it's not the best, but I don't have another idea.

I got the springs no. 74872-SP1-000. What's that ?

This torsion spring is a Left side spring applicable for both the 91-93 and the 94-95. The Right side spring is different on the 94-95 and probably this difference is due to the high-mount stop lamp built into the lid.

The clip is only designed to hold the springs apart so that they don't contact.

Are you sure that the torsion springs were preloaded as they were installed? There should be no "slack". Could one or more of those used springs be bent?

I don't think, that one of the springs is bent. They are brand new ordered at my Honda dealer. I can' t turn the springs plus 180° to get more strength, and when I see the tool (see the link in the comment of MikD) to mount the spring you are not able to do this. The springs must be fixed correct.

Opportunely the two springs was wrapped in one package with one label. In this label the number (I wrote before) is shown.

greetings
Ralph
