I have been working witht he new IBM t40 and t41. Awesome laptop. Toshibas are also pretty good from what I hear. Stay away from compaq.

Important factors would be drive space, memory, weight!!!!!!! processor cd/dvd, wireless capability

You need to give us a bit more info... Are you looking for price, portability, performance? It's like walking into an car dealership and asking for a car, preferably with four wheels.

My girlfriends Dad has a Dell Inspiron 8500. It is amazing. It has a widescreen, very sharp look, bright LCD, and you cannot even hear the keys when you type...

I would steer away from Ebay in that there will probably won't be any warranty or technical support for that matter. Warranty if VERY important with laptops as there pretty fragile and expensive also hard to fix.

I'd recommend a Dell or IBM.

processor - try to go with a pentium-4 or comparable. Not a celeron, I used to have a laptop with a celeron and it was very hot and loud. Try to get 512 MB Ram, but at LEAST 256. For Hard drive space, 30 GB is enough but 40 should be plenty. Make sure it has built in wireless card. my laptop had a dvd drive/cdrw combo which was nice. And get a good warranty!

i have a ibm and a dell, the dell sucks, their both the same years and the dell screen was replaced, the hd has bad sectors and its slower than the ibm even thought hey have the same processor/RAM and the power cord for it is messed up. i recommend a ibm, never had a problem with it. get p4 with at least L1 8K+12K= 20K, and L2 512K bytes cache or more. celeron sucks(period). thats all there is to know about celeron, run away if you see its a celeron or you will regret it.

also dont get a laptop from ebay, most of the laptops on there are junk...

Macintosh all the way. Apple can run any windows program (w/windoze emulator) and are almost impervious to virus. The FBI is currently switching to Macs because of their stability and how resistant they are to virus. Once you go Mac you never go back!

Do not buy it on Ebay. You can buy a decent laptop with $1,500 locally if you shop around and compare prices from circuit city, bestbuy, compusa, and others. Also get the sunday newspaper it usually has really good sales on laptops.

he uses it for internet

buy a new one, cheapest avaiable

if you do any video/pic editing, then something more expensive, but 1500

im sure you can buy a NEW one, with decent performance, especially if you use it for internet

IBM has the best battery life, Alienware, omg sick, but like 30 min of batt life ....lol

i like alienware becuase the logo glows ....lol (retail over 2g's)

dell is prob the way to go, but try checking out hp.com and toshiba.com

i hate centrino crap, 1.6 processor OMG, unless you like the wireless crap

and uhh... IBM are mostly used for buisness people, traveling, so they need a long batt life

my 2 cents

EDIT

apple is very simple, any moron (no offense) can use it, not that very complicated to use, and plus, IPOD, and the logo glows ....lol

the only place i buy computers from anymore is the dell outlet store. they are labled as refurbished, but they are mostly lease-returns and computers that people have returned because they didn't like them (if you buy a computer from dell, you can return it within 30 days, no questions asked; they then have to selll these as 'refurbished', because they are obviously not new anymore). they come with the full warranty support of buying a new one, and cost ~$300-$500 less than a new one. basically by doing this, you can get an $1800 laptop for $1500. here is the link to their outlet store: <http://www1.us.dell.com/content/defa...dfh&DGVCode=IR>.

for what it's worth, i got my sister an inspiron 8600 with the widescreen for her first year at college, and it is one *sweet* laptop. i work on computers for a living, so i know some good hardware when i see it (because the crap is what i end up working on most of the time).

The rule of Ebay is never spend more than you are willing to lose. I would never buy used electronics, especially via Ebay.

Dell, Toshiba, IBM.

I have an older Dell laptop which has moderate use and has never missed a beat. A relative has had a Toshiba for 2 yrs and even with constant use, it has never needed service.

Is there a computer museum? I just retired my desktop IBM 286/25. Bought a Dell 4600.
