Xclusive's Coupe Build Log

3.5 Type 2 Hybrid Swap

Well I am about to start my 3.5 swap into my 92 Acura Legend AT Coupe (the sedan is geting put on the back burner to this is done). My current motor has 165k and smokes very bad probaly from bad valve seals. Instead of going in doing valve seals, hg's, etc I just decided to swap the engine. My reason for doing the 3.5 swap was more for reliability than speed. I was able to pick up a 2002 3.5 RL motor with 29k. I have been collecting parts and I am doing a Type 2 hybrid swap with type 2 cams, type 2 fuel rails and fuel pressure regulator & type 2 throttle body with TCS. I will take many pics along the way and hopefully consolidate alot of misc information that is spread around in different threads. I will also add up the cost as well for others who plan to do this in the future (the cost does start to add up quickly I can already tell you). The countdown begins as Jonslegend will be coming up this weekend to help me out with the swap. Well some pics so far and many more to come.

Well for those who didn't see my coupe, these are pics of what my coupe used to look like and what I came out to after a Tennessee Titans football games.

I have decided to rebuild her and bring her back better and stronger than before!!

Day 1

Jonslegend arrives in TN after working all night and has offered to spend his next two days off to help me swap my motor after driving 3hrs from Birmingham, AL to Nashville, TN. Here I'll show a few pics of the swap and updates and there will be a full DIY step by step of the 3.5 Type 2 hybrid swap we did with many pics to fillow. We finally get started about noon. First thing we do is strip the front end of the coupe removing bumper, hood & headlights so we can have some room to work

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_2780.jpg

Driver side nut breaks with no problem

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_2794.jpg

Now the passenger side we were not so lucky!

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_2801.jpg

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_2800.jpg

After breaking two craftsman and two trips to Sears only to find out the lifetime replacment gurantee is only refurbished tools, we stil are not able to break it loose. So we make a trip t Lowes and have to bring out the big guns & it breaks with no problem!

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_2803.jpg

Other than that everything else went pretty smoothly. My car was originally sold in Naples, Fl and has been a southern car and luckily we had no problems removing any of the exhaust bolts:

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_2807.jpg

We continued to remove parts and label them hopefully we dont end up with a motor back in and a box full of bolts that we have no idea where they go. We stop about 11pm with everything taken apart or removed and motor ready to pull next morning. Its been a long exhausting night!

Stay Tuned!

BIGBOY 07-03-10 09:39 PM

I'm sure that coupe will be fast as hell!

Day 2

Day 2

Everything was unhooked on day 1 so 1st thing this morning was to pull the engine. This was another long day as we started at 8am in the moring after having to drag Jon out of bed. Picked up leveler from Harbor Freight which made things a little easier.

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_2855.jpg

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_2874.jpg

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_2893.jpg

Removed transmission, flywheel & intake manifold so we could mount engine to engine stand. (I'll give Jon his props here, he disconnected 4 knock sensors without breaking any of them!!!!) Also removed starter and alternator and had them tested.

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_2925.jpg

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_2903.jpg

I have always heard that people do lie about the mileage on engine so I was happy when the Valve covers were removed and engine look almost brand new. There was also a honda filter which hopefully meant the engine was taken car of and dealer maintained.

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_2931.jpg

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_2930.jpg

Engine was removed from a Florida car and there was sand around valve cover gaskets. This was carefully removed before the type 2 cams were put in.

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_2964.jpg

We then replaced cam gear, thermostat, timing belt and water pump (this was hard enuff to do on the stand, I have no idea of they do it inside the car)!

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_2968.jpg

We were starting to lose daylight but continued working, changed out the valve cover gasket & spark plugs and reinstalled the valve covers and coil packs.

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...101_2988-1.jpg

Its staring to get late at this point but the goal was to get everything ed back on the engine so tomorrow moring all we would have to do is drop theinstall engine in the car. Installed the differential, starter, compressor, changed rear main seal, front seal, put flywheel back on and bolted the transmission back up. Now teh 3.5 is starting to look like a motor again. Its about 2am in the morning so after approx 17 to 18hrs of work we called it day.

More Pics coming Soon

Day 3

Day 3

Got up this morning and started putting the type 2 intake manifold back together with all new gaskets getting it ready to install back on engine. Also added 3.2 sensors & had to do some prep work on the screws, etc. because intake wasn't prepped 100% correctly before being powercoated.

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_3039.jpg

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_3049.jpg

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_3052.jpg

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_3053.jpg

added 3.2 type 2 fuel injectors, type 2 fuel pressure regulator and the legend wiring harness

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_3061.jpg

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_3071.jpg

added new drive belts & extended oil pressure sender plug

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_3079.jpg

changed out the hoses on the firewall

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_3089.jpg

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_3092.jpg

installed motor back into the car but unfortunately all mounts aren't lining up because we are missing passenger side bracket

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_3095.jpg

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...101_3096-1.jpg

Now we come to a stopping point because unfortunately the bracket or ecu haven't arrived. It was very frustrating because we could have easily knocked this out over the weekend & been done! :angryfire: Anyways, once they arrive Jonslegend will be coming back up so we can finish up the swap! We still have a little ways to go but it shouldn't be to bad @ all and not long before start up!! I can't wait to be riding back in my coupe again! :excited::excited::excited:

Stay tuned!

Day 4

Day 4

OK lets get this swap finsihed up. Last time we left off, the passenger side bracket wasn't here and we couldnt get all of the mounts to line up. Bracket came so we lifted engine to attach bracket to motor and everything lined up perfectly on the 1st try!
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...101_3325-1.jpg

Next was the tedious part, everything under the car was hooked up: trans linkage, exhuast, mid mounts, etc.
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_3350.jpg

Put radiator back in, changed out some hoses, connected fuel filter, hooked up power steering pump & ac line & connected the vacuum lines
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_3385.jpg

Installed new axles
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_3365.jpg

put battery tray back in & was hooking up fuse box when we noticed the postive L bracket sometime along the way broke..Epic Fail! :ohgeez:
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_3391.jpg

It was late so & nothing was open to fix the wire so we ended the night here disappointed because we wanted the car running tonight. :angryfire: Only thing left to do is hook up the battery, fill up all the fluids, change the ECU & then its time for start up!
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_3397.jpg

Final Day

Changed the ECU
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_3401.jpg

Went to junkyard & cut enough wire and the L bracket from a honda civic which was an exact match. Soldered and heatshrinked wire and connected to fuse box.
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_3433.jpg

Put all fluids in car & now we are ready for start up!

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_3404.jpg

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/xMVKAU7eN2k&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/xMVKAU7eN2k&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Started up on the 1st try :excited: but was running kinda rough :angryfire:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Ba5fURv1cN0&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Ba5fURv1cN0&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

After a few adjustment engine was running very smooth:thumbsup:

Xclusive's 3.5 Type 2 Hybrid swap is a success!
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...p/101_3426.jpg

I would like to thank Jon, a real cool dude, because without his help I would probaly still be procrastinating on doing a 3.5 swap right now :lol2::lol2::lol2: & Swift for the knowledge along the way to make this a success.

Now that the coupe is back alive, I can start getting her back to "Xclusive" status (after a stupid hit and run driver)

:excited: :excited: :excited:
