17 x 7 & Offset 55 - Widest Tyre ?

I just swapped some 17*7 wheels off a JDM coupe I got for parts...

The wheels have 255 / 45's on them which looks as wide as a river

I noticed the back inside's of the tyres were warn before I put them on. Now i can hear them rubbing when I accelerate.

What is the widest tyre you can go to on 17* 7 without it rubbing.

I jumped under the car this morning and I doubt 235 would even have the neccesary clearance.

I know most people recommend / run 225's but can you really go wider ?

Also, Can you use spacers to push the wheel out & get clearance ?

The more you mess with the offset the more you screw with the suspension and the more stress you put on the control arms. I wouldnt suggest going more than +-20 from stock on any FWD car. Even that might be too much TBH

Well that, and your handling. And the increased strain on your suspension. And your fuel mileage must've taken a hit.

I'm running an 8JJ width wheel and using 'only' 225 rubber.

I have 17*8.5 ET49 rims with 235/45 tires and a koni red+h&r combo. Next year I'll swap to 225, 235 is too wide sometimes it rubs on crap roads and my fenders aren't rolled yet.
