• KA8 = 91-95 Coupe

Second generation units became available for the 1991 model year, now using a 200 hp 3.2L SOHC C32A engine. The second generation Legend was a larger, more streamlined looking automobile (drag coefficients were actually higher at .34 for sedans and .32 for coupes.) The early models could be had with either a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic transmission. Honda's choice for an engine came as a disappointment to some fans who were hoping that the NSX's 270 hp 3.0 L C30A engine would be used as-is in the Legend (quite the contrary, the only part the Legend and NSX share is the oil filter.) As a luxury car, the Legend offered a host of features seen on luxury cars of today including speed sensitive steering, integrated hands-free telephone, automatic climate control, heated leather seats, heated mirrors, 4-wheel ABS disc brakes, seat belt pre-tensioners and soft close vacuum operated doors (2-door models only).

For 1991 and 1992 the Legend was available in three trim lines (Base, L, LS) for the sedan and two trim lines for the coupe (L, LS). The higher end LS cars added automatic climate control, sportier Michelin tires, a power 4-way passenger seat, burled walnut interior trim, and body colored side moldings. In 1993, Honda made significant upgrades to the model and the 230 hp "Type II" version of the SOHC C32A engine became available in the higher end cars, appeasing some of those who had hoped for the NSX's powerplant. 1993 also saw the delete of the black molding on the entry level cars so that all models now had painted body side moldings. A new alloy wheel design with fewer spokes replaced the old one on the sedans.

More changes were made for 1994: both coupe and sedan versions received new front bumpers, a new front grill, and revised trunk lids. The word "Legend" was now spelled out in individual letters on the back of both sedan and coupe. A new GS sedan took over as the top of the line variant, sporting the "Type II" engine, upgraded brakes and a sports-suspension along with a body-colored grill (all other sedans have chrome) and the coupe's five-spoke, 16 inch wheels. The standard, Base, Legend was dropped and the "L" now became the entry level model. Also added was a limited production SE or "Special Edition" sedan which was available in both 1994 and 1995. This sedan was essentially a Legend L with a two tone paint scheme and unique wheels and floor mats. Minor changes were made again for 1995 before the model was discontinued. A six-speed manual transmission was standard on 1993 and newer LS coupes and 1994-1995 GS sedans.

Sedan & Coupe Differences

When the 2nd Generation Acura Legend was introduced the sedan was released immediately, while the coupe followed suit in mid-model year. When it was introduced, however, it was only with 2 trim levels (L & LS). Verses the sedans 3 (base, L & LS). From the beginning the coupe was only supposed to be similar to the sedan in presence, hence the almost zero compatibility in exterior panels. However, the entire drivetrain & suspension, dashboard, console and most other core parts and electronic components are interchangeable.

 • Sedan has rear seat map lights
 • Sedans have chrome grille trim (except GS sedan)
 • All coupes have body colored grille trim
 • Coupe has a shorter wheel base by 3.2"
 • Coupe is equipped with firmer shocks (except GS sedan)
 • Coupe is equipped with larger front stabilizer (sway) bar (except GS sedan)
 • Coupe is equipped with electronic door closers. As the door is closed the striker (mounted in the quarter panel) moves the door a few millimeters "sucking" it in. This aids in closing the door easily, as a matter of fact the door can be closed with the push of a finger.
 • Coupe is equipped with seatbelt presenters. The seatbelts are mounted to each seat. When the door is opened, the seatbelt is brought down level to the floor so that it does not interfere with entering and exiting and to allow for back seat entry. When the door is closed it is brought back into position.
 • Coupe has roll down rear quarter windows. This tradition started with the 1st generation Legends. Most 2 door coupes have fixed quarter windows.

1993 Model Year

1993 Was a transitional year for the Legend. Appearance wise, the sedan and coupe remained the same. New paint colors were available, the Type F (light tan) interior received a slight color change and the blue and grey interiors were no longer available. The instrument cluster was revised with a different font on the gauge background. A revised engine mount system was installed. All cars were now equipped with a harmonic balancer instead of a solid crank pulley. Automatic transmissions were modified to shift a bit smoother and the transmission computer (integrated into the ECU) was updated with a fuzzy-logic shift program that helped with 3-4 gear hunting.

Coupe: Both the L and LS coupe received a major drive train upgrade with a standard type II motor and the availability of the 6 speed transmission. The LS coupe received a traction control system lifted out of the NSX. It had heavier gauge body panels for structural rigidity and the front and rear control arms were slightly more firm. The front brakes received an upgrade to dual piston calipers and slightly thicker rotors (rear remained the same). The automatic transmission had a higher final gear ratio (internal to the transmission - the differential gearing remained the same) and modified shift points, also had the same fuzzy-logic shift program.

1994 & 1995 Model Years

Two new models were introduced for the last two years of production, the GS and SE both on the sedan platform. The general appearance remained the same, however the coupe and sedan received a revised front bumper and rear badging with "L-E-G-E-N-D" lettering stretched across the lid. This year, all Legend models were equipped with an electronic memory tilt and telescoping steering wheel. The coupe received an updated trunk lid with an LED stop light strip built in and a modified upper curvature. This curvature enhances and changes the look of rear end dramatically, especially on cars not equipped with a spoiler. The sedans were equipped with a more flush fitting front grille. The moon roof wind deflector was eliminated. This is the chrome metal piece mounted at the front of the moon roof opening that pops up when the roof is opened.

If you are familiar with Honda, the release of the "Special Edition" model indicates the body style will be changing soon. The SE was an L model legend with standard leather seating, two tone paint job and "Special Edition" embossed into the floor mats. The GS was also added this year. This has all of the features of an LS sedan retrofitted with the Type II drivetrain and suspension transplanted from Coupe. Externally, it's only distingushing features are the 16" hammer style wheels and flush fitting, body colored grille. The GS 6Spd is one of the most desirable of all Legend models due to its relative rarity.

Trivia

 • The Japan Domestic Market version of the 1990 (2nd gen was 1990-1996 there) Legend was the first vehicle offered with a navigation system, although it was not satellite-based and instead relied on accelerometers.
 • The "replacement" for the Legend sedan is sold as the Acura RL in North America, although Honda continues to sell it as the Legend in most other areas of the world.
 • The tooling and intellectual property rights of the second generation Legend were licensed to Daewoo Motors of South Korea, where a clone of the Legend sedan, called the Daewoo Arcadia, was produced from 1993 to 2000. During this period, Honda also held a small stake in Daewoo Motors.
