Mine did that until recently when I took it out of the hole, and the gear thing broke, so now it just falls shut.digger89L said:Yes ...that same compartment. When new, the lid would go down slowly, as opposed to slamming shut.
Okay ...I wondered about that too. So ...what's your explanation? Why would they design it so the lid would not fall open when the unit is upside down???telafonic said:Mine did that until recently when I took it out of the hole, and the gear thing broke, so now it just falls shut.
I kinda doubt they (Honda) were worried about rolling over, haha.
Anyone who's done any work at all on these cars will know that, if anything, they were "over-engineered" in many respects. They didn't make "happy mistakes". I'd guess (someone likely knows for sure) that these G1 Legends took maybe 6 or 8 years to design and engineer ...meaning everything (except cup holders) was well-planned and deliberately designed ...like the damper in the storage pocket lid ...and the latch that prevents it from opening should someone decide to adapt a G1 Legend to run on the Mantis Roller Coaster at Cedar Point, Ohio. ....I'm sticking with my original theory.telafonic said:Well, I'm not sure, but my guess is that they weren't thinking about it being upside down when they designed it, I think they just designed it to work nicely and without a lot of effort, and keeping itself shut may have been a bonus, or possibly so it didn't bounce around.
I remember some guy was trying to pop one open once, so he kept hitting it, thinking it was latched, and would pop up, kind of like those press and pull cabinets. Anyway, it was funny.
You have to actually remove the storage unit, and hold it upside down to observe the latch in action, preventing the lid from falling open. Really.telafonic said:Haha, okay. Maybe not a happy mistake, but if they believed the car to be prone to rollover maybe they should have put roll bars in.
But now maybe I'm thinking the '87 sedan I have doesn't have that latch. Where is it located? Not the damper, but the latch.
That slamming noise is annoying.digger89L said:Yes ...that same compartment. When new, the lid would go down slowly, as opposed to slamming shut.
