Does anyone know what it mean when your retrieve your codes and you get 4 long and 9 short blinks on the TCS light? Yes the TCS light and not the engine light!! this is code 49 but what does it mean?

PGM-FI light flashes on then went off...

My PGM-FI light came on the other day for about twenty minutes and then went off. When I started the car and began driving it lit up again after about 10 minutes or so of driving. I came home stopped the engine and then drove it again about 1 hour later. It hasn't come back on since and that was about two days ago. Should I be concerned or was this some weird electrical fluke? I am new to Acuras and cars in general so please if you answer please be as specific as possible. I appreciate any help. Thanks.

Need help on high engine temperature..

Hello all. I am new to this forum but I've been driving a '91 Legend L Cpe for almost five years without any problems. However over a year the engine temperature indicator has been acting either weird or accurately like it would go up to half way at idling or low speed drive, then it came back to normal mark (2nd bottom one). Another thing when the high engine temperature was high was that the hot air was not coming out when I turned the fan on and adjusted the temperature selection to warm or hot during the cold season. Then I also noticed during the first few minutes after starting it up, the engine would rev up and down quickly (1k rpm- 2.5k rpm). After driving it for a few miles it stopped revving up and down at idle speed.

But for the last few months it has seemed to get worse as it revved up and down for a longer period of time after starting. The engine temperature has gone way up to the red mark almost 8 out of 10 times even when driving it at freeway speed, then if I turned on the fan and selected warm or hot air the scary engine temperature indicator would drop quickly to its normal operating mark and the hot air would come out of the vents. But it would do this either at the moment I turned on (or off) the fan and selected the hot air or after several minutes.

No engine check light ever came on. I stopped and checked the two electric fans when the engine temp. indicator was more than halfway mark and they did not run. The engine did feel a little hotter than usual but I am not sure it was going to overheat later. The radiator coolant is full and clean withou any leak. Everything else seems to be in working conditions but what has caused the engine temperature indicator to go high and back to normal after anywhere from first few to 10 minutes after starting up and driving.

I read the engine light codes thread that has a code 6 for engine coolant temperature sensor. I also searched for all temperature-related sensor parts (or thermostat) and found out so far there are two of them:

1) Water temp. sender
2) Thermostat (don't know for what use)

Would it be possible there is a faulty temperature-related sensor?

Any help will be greatly appreciated and sorry for the lengthly post.

So where exactly is this thingie you have to jump with the paperclip?? I found the fuse, so I am half way there :)

I am having trouble with my acceleration...i think its the plugs (I am due at just over 120,000 miles) and probably the fuel filter (which is due as well). I've been putting crappy fuel in Angela (87 octane...yes i know :() but its sooo $$$$ here in CT!!!

I've got a code 9, number 1 Cylinder Piston Position. How do I got about fixing that? It's the only code that comes up. If I just reset the ECU, will that reset the position, or do I need to manually turn the piston? I've got a haynes and a chilton's manual, but they aren't helping. I'd appreciate any help from you all. Thanx.

Are there also diagnostic codes from a blinking D4 light?

In a previous post you mentioned the D4 light blinking to indicate a transmission problem. Are there codes you can pull from that signal as well to help pinpoint a problem. I have a 91 legend which is intermittently receiving blinking D4 - transmission warning light with erratic speedometer(intermittent also). Mechanic and transmission specialist (not dealer) can't find problem on the surface w/out going into transmission - big $$ on a '91 with 175,000 mi. Drives Great - could possibly be a sensor problem?

Yes, there are codes you can pull from a blinking D4 light.
Taken from the Helms:
When the PGM-FI/AT Electronic Control Unit (ECU) senses an abnormality in the input or output systems, the D4 indicator light will blink. However, when the Service Check Connector (located on the ECU cover) is connected with a jumper wire, the D4 indicator light will blink the problem code when the ignition switch is turned on.
Problem codes 1 - 9 are indicated by individual short blinks, while Problem codes 10 - 17 are indicated by a series of long and short blinks. One long blink equals 10 short blinks. Add the long and short blinks together to determine the problem code.
Let us know what code you are getting, and we can look it up for you. Chances are, it is your VSS.

Yes, in essence, you want to make a connection between the two wires. The ignition needs to be turned to the second position (third position being the one that starts the car).

Pardon my ignorance, but...

...I'm new. What can I say. Oh. Did I mention that I am mechanically inclined? I screw up everything. But, before I screw this up...
I have read all the posts, and think I have a pretty good idea of what to look for, and understand the light sequence. I went to the Helm site, but, I'm not sure WHAT I'm looking for there. I saw several items in the DIY section, but, have no idea which one I need to read the codes.
I just bought the car today, and the check engine light has come on. The seller had no clue (go figure, it was his son's car and been sitting for about a month). What, EXACTLY, do I need to get the codes? Thanks for the help.

Oh...it's an 89 Legend, automatic trans.

Look under the passenger seat there is a little metal box covered by a piece of black plastic (with a clear plastic window) and a light that flashes when you have the key in the aux position. Count the amount of times it blinks and use this list below to to diagnose the problem.

1986-1990 Legend (G1)
Code # Explanation
1 Front Oxygen Sensor
2 Rear Oxygen Sensor
3 Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor
5 Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor
4 Crank Angle Sensor
6 Coolant Temperature Sensor
7 Throttle Angle Sensor
8 Top-Dead-Center Position Sensor
9 Number 1 Cylinder Piston Position
10 Intake Temperature Sensor
12 E.G.R. System
13 Atmospheric Pressure Sensor
14 Electronic Idle Control Module
15 Ignition Output Signal
17 Vehicle Speed Sensor
18 Ignition Timing Adjustment

I'm just new and confused and lost

  I am hella lost? This will help prevent future problems by finding out what your ECU is reading? will this help fix my shimmy problem? ( swurving left to right on the freeway on some roads)

ANY DIY on how to acess this unit?

the ECU only spits out codes when theres somethin electrically or mechanically wrong with the engine...if theres nothing wrong, it wont tell you any codes, so you cant prevent anything that may happen later...

and it doesnt deal with anything other than the engine, so no it wouldnt fix your shimmy problem

A little Less Lost and COnfused almost understanding now! thanks!

Aww dang it i'm out of luck. Ok, so i should check my ECU for code readings every oil change? once a month? (examples) just to make sure that my engine is running smoothly and nothing is wrong electronically?

Ok i would like to check my ECU thing , because i never did when i got the vehicle. What do i do again.??!?? cuz after reading all the post's i'm still lost.. and kinda thinking.. like what the heck are they talking about. Thanks again MAN your THE MAN!!! :****:

Let me know !please

well theres no need to even check the ECU unless your Check Engine light is on...if not, dont worry about it...thats a good thing lol.

No check engine light = no major problem = ECU wont even say anything to you

just curious, did you go back to the FIRST post where Leon explained how to do everything? lol...or you did, and you just still didnt understand it?

Location of ECU on 1991-1995 Legends

On the 1991-1995 Acura/Honda Legends, you have to jump a service connector located on the passenger side right under the dashboard near the door. The connector has two pin inputs. Connecting them with something like a paper clip will force the check engine light on the dashboard to display the codes.

Extracting Codes

With the car either running or the key in the ON position, perform the necessary steps above and observe the blinking of the light. The light will blink displaying all the codes in sequence and then repeating them.

Reading Codes

The code numbers are read by counting the number of blinks between longer pauses. On 1986-1990 Legends, the code number is indicacted by a series of rapid LED blinks between longer pauses.

On 1991-1995 cars, codes 1-9 are indicated by a series of short flashes; two digit codes use a number of long flashes for the first digit followed by the number of short flashes for the second digit. So a code 43 will be represented by 4 long and 3 short flashes.

The position of codes in a sequence can be helpful in doing diagnostics. A display showing 1-1-1-pause-9-9-9 indicates two problems occurring at different times. A sequence showing 1-9-1-9-1-9 indicates two problems occurring at the same time.
