Hey guys, just got my first legend its an 87 Coupe L. I just got a few questions, some are dumb and some are valid so just work with me.

1. What does the little button on the power mirror switch do?

2. My drivers side mirror moves a lot when im driving, how do I remove the the mirror from the housing and see if anything is loose?

3. My antenna mast is busted off, do I have to replace the entire motor and everything, or can I simply replace the mast. If I can, Can somebody give me a step by step process?

4. Sometimes my check engine light comes on after a little while of driving, but when I shut off the car, the light turns off. I always thought those stayed on till you cleared the ECU...

So thats all I got for now might think of more later. Thanks guys.

Welcome to the forums!

1. What does the little button on the power mirror switch do?
Heated mirrors... Applies a small amount of heat to defrost the wing mirrors.

2. My drivers side mirror moves a lot when im driving, how do I remove the the mirror from the housing and see if anything is loose?
You have to remove the door panel (about 5 screws and a bunch of plastic clips), disconnect the power connector, remove the little plastic panel on the inside of the mirror, remove 3 screws, and finally remove the mirror. You may be able to take it apart while the mirror is still on the car but IMO its easier to remove it. There are two plastic brackets on the plastic housing that contains the motors to power the mirror and they frequently break. You can either replace the mirror or fashion new brackets. Another easier solution is to move the mirror all the way to the right and look behind the mirror... You should be able to see what is loose and just slap in a bunch of glue (worked for me for about 6 months before I had to reapply... finally got around to replacing the whole thing).

3. My antenna mast is busted off, do I have to replace the entire motor and everything, or can I simply replace the mast. If I can, Can somebody give me a step by step process?
Do you hear the motor running when you turn on the radio? If not, you have to replace the whole assembly. If it is working, you can buy a new mast on eBay and feed it in after removing all the old one (may require removal of the entire assembly). I just bought a universal one for about $26 and it works like a charm.

4. Sometimes my check engine light comes on after a little while of driving, but when I shut off the car, the light turns off. I always thought those stayed on till you cleared the ECU...
The code should still be in the computer. On the coupes, it's under the passenger carpet in the passenger footwell. The number of blinks indicates the code and the code descriptions is listed in the newbie FAQ stickied at the top of the First Generation Legend forum.

Ahhh. muchos gracias. I got heated mirrors? Who knew....! I knew I would come up with another question. My fuel gauge only will read up to about 1/4 of a tank when the tank is full. Is that the fuel sender?

^^^ Other possible cause; float level sensor is seized or float level contact is corroded <=all these components are incorporated within the fuel sending unit.

Simple cleaning of them contact points might address this... otherwise, I'd replace the fuel sending unit assembly; as previously noted.

Welcome to the forums and enjoy your stay.

You can get the oxygen sensors from any autopart store. Oh and if your front oxy sensor is shot you might as well replace the rear as well they are around $20 each iirc.
The dealer prices are ridiculous for OEM oxy sensors... about $200 a pop! Just get one at an auto parts store for about $20ish for a universal (you have to cut and splice your old connector on) or get one that'll connect right up for about $50. Replace both while you're at it...

Yeah I'll prolly go the universal route. Could anyone post some pictures of where these 02 sensors are located and the best way to remove them?
See attached.

You'll need a special socket to R&R the sensor. It's readily available at any auto parts store. Some places will let you rent the socket for free with a deposit.

The front sensor access is kind of tight because the AC hoses can get in the way.

Here are some visuals on them o2 sensors...

Front; top view... just follow the yellow/green wire connector!

Alright got both sensors replaced, code went away. If only I could post a pic of the cheater bar I found. Twas a metal sign post, 4 feet long, ended up breaking my wrench.

Glued the mirror in place. That's working mighty nice.

But I found a new problem. My tint on my rear window is peeling to a point where when I roll down my windows while driving tint flakes come off and it looks like a damn wonderland in my car.

Heh just go to an auto parts store and get tint remover solution and a razor blade. Remove all the old tint and get it re-tinted if desired...

^ I would actually advise against that if your rear defroster still work...

My PO did that :( rear defrost never worked and every single line was gone (read: unrepairable without just replacing the rear windshield) along with the embedded radio antenna...

Take it to a window tinting place and put the burden on them to do it....
