Hey everyone,
back again for another summer.
I've got the legend back on the road....
already had quite a bit of work done ( alternator replaced, belt, new front brake pads and rotars oil change blah blah).
I took her for a long cruise this weekend to get the fluids pumping again...everything seemed fine until today.
I drove her about 5 minutes away (in D4) and the D4 light started to blink.
Once I reached a red light, I put her in D3 to see if the D4 light would stop blinking but it didnt.
I turned the car off..once I came back and turned her on again, the light was not blinking, but I drove her home in D3, scared to death of course.

What does this mean??? Any suggestions???

Thanks

Robyn

You need to pull the code off the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) and look it up in the online manual. Do a search for "tansmission trouble codes" and you should find what you're looking for. This link shows you what the codes mean and the link on the page tells you how to pull them from the computer:

You'll find the transmission section of the service manual with detailed instructions. Good luck.

Ok, what is VSS??

Anyway, I did the code check already, nothing came up.
The D4 light shows up when I turn the key into the On position and then goes off again.
It does not blink and the engine light doesnt blink either.

Any other suggestions?

oh ok!
thanks....

I havent noticed anything odd about my speedometer, but I was only a few mins away from my destination...
I will take it out later to see if I notice anything odd about it.
No codes were extracted.

More money....AGHHHH.

^^ that is normal.

Just drive until the D4 flashes again, then pull the code. (driving in D3 wont make a difference, its ok to drive in D4 with the d4 flashing.) look in FAQ for info on how to pull the code. The code should tell you whats wrong; it isnt necessarily a VSS error.

The D4 indicator lamp is supposed to activate for about 2 seconds and then shut off when you first start the vehicle. Suggest you reset the system by removing the No. 15 fuse located in the under-dash fuse/relay box for at least 10 seconds. The number 15 is 4th row up from the bottom, and 4th one in. Then drive over 30 mph for about 10 min and recheck. You may have experienced just a "glitch". Your CHECK ENGINE lamp did not activate, did it? This could indicate a fuel system fault.

When a VSS goes, the main symptom is a blinking D4. For myself, my initial symptom was a 1x sudden disengagement of the Cruise. No blinking D4.

The D4 self-diagnostic can be triggered by 17 different codes so it is important to access the computer before "throwing parts at a problem".

ok, that sounds good.

I will drive it again and try to pull the codes while she is still running...do that first.
My battery was replaced a few days ago as well, so Im figuring the system is already been reset? Esp considering I couldnt pull any codes from it yesterday.

Anyway, I'll do drive her first, see if it does happen again...if I cant pull the codes then I will try to pull the fuse and do it again.

No engine light went on....and it didnt flash when I checked for codes either...I looked at both (engine code and D4 light).

I was wondering myself if it was a glitch too.
I hope it is...
this car is already costing me money and Ive been driving it for a weekend! ahhh

Thanks for everyones help!

Take note of your guage cluster while you go for your drive. The very first thing you should expect if it's not a glitch is a disconnected sensor of sorts. Watch the engine temp guage. Pay attention to throttle response and if it drops down into 3rd from 4th upon heavy acceleration. Also, of course watch the speedometer for any weird activity.
