There's a lot of overheating problems on the 2nd Generation boards right now. The questions should all go in here from now on, so we don't clutter up the board with the same questions over and over. Any new thread that is created will be moved to this thread. This is meant to be a 100% discussion on the overheating problems of the 91-95 Legends. Questions, answers, theories, and anything that pertains to overheating, coolant, water pumps, thermostats, heater cores, radiators, and radiator hoses are permitted. Off topic and other garbage posts will be deleted.

Thanks
MGMT.

Beautiful. Matter of fact is there any way that all those threads like the one SHAWNDRA just posted not to long ago could merged into this thead. I think that would kick this thread off to an awesome start.

i had my head gasket done at 136k and radiator replaced at the same time. im at 172k now and i replaced my radiator this past weekend because i saw steam at the top and residue from what looked like a small coolant leak. last time i replaced the radiator the leak was on the driver's side, this time it was on the passenger's side. it seems like these leaks dont trigger anything on a pressure test because last time i had the radiator replaced, 2 separate shops told me there were no leaks and it wasnt until i did some research here and looked around where people had reported leaks that i saw the indications of a leak myself.

so far, the temp guage hasn't gone past where it normally sits and as of Sunday night there was no air in the system to bleed out. i figure i will wait til this weekend and try to bleed it again, if there's air then i have a leak somewhere else or possibly a BHG. no air, im going to assume im ok for now and start looking for a good deal on a 1999+ 3.5 RL.

for everyone having problems, good luck

I replaced my thermostat yesterday, and I can't tell if it solved my problems yet. When I drove the car this morning the temp gauge never spiked, but the heat was still not blowing hot air consistently (sometimes blowing super hot air and other times blowing coldish air). I've had problems with air getting into the system and I have bled the air out several times.

I guess my question is if anybody has ever had problems of air in the cooling system, and non-consistent heat, did replacing the thermostat fix these problems?? Or do I have a bigger problem with my water pump/radiator/HG/heater core?

chances are the thermostat is not what was letting air into the system

If air is repeatedly getting into the system, I would say you probably have a bigger issue to deal with

My cold air ordeal was recified after replacing thermostat. Before that, the needle would never get up to operating termperature, always a notch or 2 under (depending if I was on highway or just sitting in traffic) so in essence the coolant never had the chance to get hot enough to blow hot air.

How can I tell if I have Honda brand coolant? Is that even possible? I need to top it off just a bit...if it is not Honda, would it be ok to add Honda or will mixing coolants cause me trouble?

DO NOT MIX 2 DIFFERENT TYPES OF COOLANTS! It would be best if you just did a complete flush and refill with only Honda Coolant. Stevieray told me about it and yes it makes a difference even though I don't have the exact reason why. Any Honda fluids will be expensive, but it will be well worth it.

heater not blowing hot air, usualy a sign of low coolent. when u turn ur heater on it it makes the "heater controll valve" open and allow hot coolent to flow into ur dash and warm the air in the vents. having not enough coolent will cause little or no heat and air in ur system. best of luck!

my heater wasn't blowing cold air, the next day, the bearing seal on the water pump gave out and dumped all my coolant on the road. The only bad thing about that is, it didn't do it until you hit 2000 RPM, so it was leaking while I was driving, I couldn't see it while it was idling. I had to rev the engine with the throttle body to find the leak. Also, I could only see a little bit of coolant sitting on the lower plastic cover, most of it drips straight on the ground.

My coolant level was completely full, and just like before I have once again gotten air in my cooling system. I have never found a leak outside the car. Looks like I'm going take the car to get tested for a BHG. I'm just confused b/c I don't have the white smoke or loss of power that normally happens from a BHG...

Cole, I had a small leak in one of my water return hoses that was letting air into my system but the coolant wasn't actually leaking onto the ground so I couldn't see the leak. One shop said I had BHG but my Acura dealer found the leak and all is fixed now..

I was going through some old literature tucked away in the owners manual and I came across a brochure from the actual dealer where my car was purchased that says 'Precision Team Maintenance Schedule" and it listed replacing the timing belt and water pump at 48 months or 60,000 miles. What's up with that? I always heard it was 6 years or 90,000 mi and they certainly weren't replaced in my 120,000 mi service (not on the mechanic's printed check list).

Ok, So i topped it off last night and drove around for about 50miles. Nothing happened... So, Tonight, Im driving and it starts to do it.... I look at my coolent and what do you know. the resevour is empty again and under the rad cap i dont see any antifrezze. I visually look under the car.. antifreeze EVERYWHERE.... So, now, what is the worse senerio here.. a leaky hose/rad?
at max 150.00 Reapir??

i'm having the same problems as Cole Austin. i JUST started doing it tonight. my temp. gauge would show normal temps, (little below half-way). was driving with the heat on, and all of a sudden it went cold and my temp needle went up almost into the RED!!! so i turned off the hot(cold) air, and it went down to normal. then it went back up! i got home, checked my resevoir, and it's fine. i'll check my radiator tomorrow morning. but didnt see or hear any leaks or steam. HELP!!!

tell me what you find out Cole.

call me gay, but im starting to get the slight feeling that alot of our cars are getting small leaks here, and there. causing much added pressure in the system, in the end causing BHG, best thing to do is check all ur hoses guys. get down in there with a flash light, jack ur car up and look all around check ur lower dash for leaking coolent, smell ur air comming outta the vents, does it smell like coolent at all? can u smell coolent in ur engine bay? is it leaking anywhere? take it to the shop and spend 70 bucks to get it checked. get a diognostic and maybe even go to more then one place to hvae it checked. i my self dont trust mechanics really, they have always ripped me off. best of luck yall

i had the overheating problem for a while. So i brought my car to the dealership to see whats wrong. They said my waterpump was leaking out coolant. I got it fixed for $500. Its been 2 months since i did so and everything is working fine.

agreed, its better to spend the couple hundred dollars getting everything checked than to start having problems and end up with 1000$+ in repairs

I got cooling problems. They wont go away! Acura of Spokane put a new thermostat in it. They had it for 3 days and couldn't find the problem; finally they did. It was about 2 weeks ago. I dont drive my Legend much anymore because I am in school, but I drove it for 6 hours today to get home for Thanksgiving. Drove fine unitl I got stopped in traffic in the worst snow conditions ever. Well I was sitting there for about 10 minutes and my temperature started to go up. I got off the road and waited for the car to cool off and then it was fine the rest of the way home. I did some of my own testing and found that my cooling fans are not working at all. But, when I turn the A/C they work and the temp goes right down. At first I thought it was a fuse, but it is good, and the fans work with A/C. Is there a control somewhere that could go bad that works the fans? what would keep the fans from turing on?

Thanks, is the temp sending unit the one in the bottom of the radiator? I plan to put a new one of those in this evening. I already got the part. Is there a really good trick to getting the air bubbles out?
If that doesn't work can I get the relays from a parts store or do I have to go to Acura?

I will reply with my results later tonight, thanks again

My '91 fan control unit was replaced because of a AC related problem. The AC is working fine since it was replaced.
Sure, this fan control unit control both the AC fan and the radiator fan and it is a common problem. Ask you mechanic to look into this. I was around $150 for the part and quite easy to replace.

I am going to replace a sensor on the top of the engine on Friday if I can get the part and if that isn't the problem then its got to be that relay. It is the only thing left that could keep the fans from working. My fans work when I turn my AC on so I think that means my relay is good right? It must be that sensor on the top of the engine.

At first when my car starts overheating cause of the fan not turning on. Even with the AC switch on.I turn the engine off the fans comes on. Then i start messing with the relays like switching them around. Then I ran test to see if the fan worked yet. Now when it start to get hot i turn the engine off. The fan doesn't come on at all anymore. Even after i switch back the relays to normal.:(

If the Legend has problems cooling, why hasn't an aftermarket company redesigned a better system? I am looking for a nice 94-95 Legend GS and would like to estimate the possible expense of ownership. From searching on this list, i found this car has two main problems(do I need to know more?): cooling of the engine and a $1000 service every 90,000 miles(water pump and belt). I noticed a nice set of all weather tires is around $100/tire. Brake pads and rotars are $50/two wheels, $60/wheel. Besides oil/filter, airfilter, sparkplug changes at the correct intervals, I should be set until the car is around 150k. What do you think?
