which would be "better" ....

1. HIR bulbs or
2. 80/100 watt bulbs

Also, do you think the lenses and reflectors could SAFELY handle the extra heat from 80 and 100 watt bulbs ?

lens and reflector should be fine with 80/100w

i thought you already bought the HIR bulbs...

as stated the HIR bulbs are OEM and you wont need a harness and you'll actually have bulbs that arent a lie.

are you looking for color or just better light output..

btw if you are looking for bulbs that use higher wattage... make sure they actually do use that amount

some bulbs will say 55w>85w

or 55w draw 85w output

its still using 55w but bulb manufacturers claim that its equal to 85w which is a lie.

bl420, I ordered a custom heavy duty harness AND 4 HIR bulbs ... the bulbs are out of stock at the Canadian distributor I ordered from.

I ordered a costly heavy duty wiring harness and Daytime running light module to make sure I can increase the wattage of the bulbs IF the improvement with HIR bulbs are not bright enough.

I am not prepared to spend the time or money on HIDs or driving lights so this is my solution. Thanks again for your input.

daytime running light module wont allow you to increase the wattage at all...

where did you hear this info?

what the module does is actually cut the wattage in half or around there basically lowering intensity... and it probably has a sensor when it reaches dark it bypass the module's lower wattage circuit.

Stu, you don't need a heavy-duty harness for the HIRs. The current draw is only 55 watts. Won't hurt though. BTW, I bought the HIR 9011 high beams and modded them to fit in place of the 9006's. We'll see how they do tonight.

i wanted the heavy duty harness just in case I move to higher wattage bulbs later.
I am not 100% sure the lens and reflector will be fine with 80/100w.

Stevieray, good luck !

B.TW. on another thread I followed a link to that Daniel Stern website and it talked about how drastically the brightness diminshed with a decrease in voltage (the reduction of brightness is not linear from a reduction in voltage, it's exponential). Because the upgraded wiring harnesses use relays to control the power directly from the battery to the bulbs with larger wire, it has much less resitance than the stock wiring harness and therefore increases the voltage seen by the bulb (and therefore will increase the brightness of the bulb). So there is more than one reason to use a harness like that....

yes, he said that to me when we spoke. The man knows a lot more than you dudes want to give him credit for ... some of you know-it-alls here really should, by now at least, learn the difference between "modding" and improving cause there is a big difference !

Thanks logic!

umm... no one ever said and definitely not me... has said anything about upgrading your harness wont give you brighter bulbs...

I just told you that its not needed with 55w bulbs...

its not that i dont want to give him credit... i dont want to give him my money... $100 for a wiring harness???

I never did say that he doesn't know what he's talking about.

what logic stated is just common sense and you dont need stern to teach it to you... it doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out if you're upgrading to a bigger gauge wire that it can carry more current.

I'm sure he knows much more than I do about this subject, but in life you need to be able to read between the lines to figure out what is real and what was said in his best interests.

For instance, the furnace pilot light at my church blew out two weeks ago when we had increddibly high winds here in the Denver area (gusts up to 90 MPH!!) then a super cold spell right afterwards which froze the water pipes since the furnace wasn't running to keep the building heated. They called a plumber to fix the leaks and he wanted to replace all the pipes in the building because they are galvinized steel and well over 30 years old (the building is a historical landmark that's well over 100 years old, so the pipes are probably 60-80 years old) saying if this one went then the rest will probably go very soon afterwards. We are a very small church (about 20 members) and can't afford the $4k bill he wanted to hand us for replacing all the water lines so I did it myself. He's a professional and I'm sure, even if he's a bad plumber, that he knows alot more than I do about plumbing, but I knew what he was saying was B.S because the pipe burst from freezing not from rusting out and the other pipes could go soon or they could last another 60-80 years. After fixing the leak myself, I found the pipes are not rusting at all so there is no need to replace them, he was speaking of what was best for him, not what was best for us...

That bigger wires can carry more current is extremely obvious, the fact that the relatively small factory wiring adds RESISTANCE to the circuit and therfore REDUCES the VOLTAGE applied to the bulbs was something I knew but didn't ever think about in this application so it was sort of a revelation. The fact that the light output declines EXPONENTIALLY with a linear drop in voltage was something I didn't know at all...

The fact that you can make your own harness to do the same thing for $20-30 is where he is probably talking in his self interest instead of ours, although it's perfectly reasonable for people who don't want to use a couple hours of their time to save $40-60...(If I had over time available that would be me since I make $58/hr double time after 8 hrs of overtime, but I haven't had any over time in 2 years now.... )

hey, I think you got it right, but I may NOT be paying an extra $60 for ONLY his expetrise. He just may be hooking me up with something better too. At least I hope so .... and he didn't think too much about the quality of the wiring harness that was posted at the beginning of the thread, and he did say before buying that he advised making my own too ! I lack the expertise, tools or interest in making my own.

Wish me luck. If someone will post pics for me, I will take pics of the harness I get and the "before and after " pics

but if stu knew how to make his own he wouldn't be asking stern now would he??

people trust people that are knowlegeable about a subject and are already experienced.

doing things again over and over you'll gain knowledge on how to do it better the next time around

i could be a roofing contractor and tell you this is how its done and this is what you need.... do you still think you would do it on your own?

im a gemini stop argueing with me :giggle: :giggle:

Not to be argumentative, but Yeah!

My dad and I built our house so I know quite abit about construction (I have re-shingled my own roof) and I worked customer service for 2 1/2 years when I started w/AT&T so I have a really good B.S. meter.... :D (take that!! :giggle: )

B.T.W. what's with the black dude in your sig? I thougt colored folks was supposed to have rythum!!!(look at me, I can't even spell it :giggle: )
