A needlenose plier can be used to remove the stripped brass phillip screw. It'll take a bit of effort and the screw will be ruined. If you don't have an extra one for replacement, an old torx screw can be used as a replacement.

I spoke to my mechanic today and he said that there is a special tool that they use to remove this.

not sure where the bolt or screw is located that your talking about . but. if you have a philips head screw or bolt that is chewed up you can take a dremmel tool and using a cutting blade make a cut in the screw and take it out with a flathead screwdriver.

Thanks!

Thanks to these photos and description, my repair went without a hitch. I did use channel lock pliers to gently rotate the unit for removal from the differential, but other than that I followed the instructions to the letter. Takes less than an hour. Have no fear if you are considering doing this repair yourself. Take your time, follow the instructions, and save some money.

Thanks!

My VSS has been sitting in my glovebox for months. Maybe I'll do it this week.

The stock o-ring on my old VSS w/ 97K miles on it was fine when I replaced it. I only replaced it because my vss kit from the dealer came with a new one.

replaced the VSS without even taking the unit out, IT IS A !
i couldnt get the unit out, but when i was tugging on it a bunch of brown fliud leaked out, what was the fluid? and should i replace some of it? three hours of my life but the speedo isnt flippin out anymore. =D

if you're speedometer doesnt work at all....as in stays at 0 miles an hour, when reality you're probably going 70....Would that be the VSS or something else?

Definitely VSS. Look at your odometer and see if it's turning, if not, VSS.

changed VSS

Hi I read this thread and replaced my VSS.I had all the symptoms of a bad vss, my d4 light blinks, and my speedometer jumps around, so I changed it today and now my speedometer doesnt even move, it just stays at zero, and my d4 light always blinks now instaed of once in a while. just wondering after you change the vss does it take some time to start working? Do I have to drive the car for a awhile like on the freeway? I just drove the car up and down the street and it just stays at zero with the blinking d4 light. Also I reset the ecu. did I buy and defective VSS kit? it was brand new in plastic packaging. any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Just picked up a used '91 a few days ago. It's an auto and it exhibits all mentioned above: Speedo ususally not working, blinking D4, and shifts abrubtly (especially from 1st to 2nd). I live on Guam, where can I order a VSS in the US mainland? This forum rocks! Never owned an Acura (I'm a diehard Mustang owner) just got it as a second car so I can supercharge the 'stang. It's a really smooth car and I will definetly keep it and don't mind spending a little money on it to keep it goin, very good daily driver!

I just changed out my VSS and it took me no longer than 2 hours taking my time. Thanks for the pics at the top very useful!! A PH2 bit worked the best getting the phillips screws out.

Your Diagram - Helped

Thanks so much. Your diagram was extremely helpful. I had the D4 blinking on the dashboard. The spedo was whirlwinding.

I did change the VSS in about two hours, but the problem is still there.

Any suggestions?

Does anyone know if this will help my car shifting like his ^ from first to second a little smoother/ or is there something I can do to make it shift smoother. I dont have any other symptoms at least yet i dont. If anyone know's this would be greatly appreciated.

Hey all,
I currently have the freaking speedo and blinking D4. The check engine light just came on. It was code 17 for the VSS. Could it be a bad ground? I wound think that the connection might just be loose.

Also, the drain holes for the sunroof keep clogging. (wicked mess when it rains)
Are there only the two in the front corners?
Thanks
KC
